good laughs

Leftovers. That's what we had for dinner tonight. Somewhere between working, coming home to cut hair, and catering to Mr. I Am Crying Every Second Because I Am Getting My Third Tooth This Week I forgot to make dinner. Very June Cleaver of me isn't it? Anyway, after things settled down a bit and my little monkey was all tucked in, it hit me, THIS make you laugh til it hurts show is on TONIGHT. SO...if you are looking for a good laugh this is the show. I find it especially funny because my hubs is exactly like Jeff. I SWEAR at least once or twice a show I look over and exclaim, "WE JUST had this conversation!" Anyway, you get my point.
Funny show. Lots of laughs. Enjoy.
Sidenote: The hubs doesn't think it's laugh out loud funny like me, but he is entertained by it too.
Disclaimer: Keep in mind this is my guilty pleasure...so don't be too offended.

my world...for my record

I always imagined myself living in a black & white, eat your food storage, and sew-your-own clothes kind of world if the economy ever went through another depression. Surprisingly enough though, my world is still in color. Instead I feel as though my world is rather prosperous. Can you say that even if you aren't talking about money? We are still able to purchase what we need, the hubs and I both have jobs, and I have a healthy 7 1/2 month old child. Don't get me wrong, our family is definately feeling the pinch, especially since both of us work in the real estate industry (remind us never to do that again). But I never thought that I would be in the prime of my child bearing years when things hit rock bottom.

For the past few months I have wondered what to write about this period in our lives. While it might not be the most uplifting time, I don't want to forget it. Remember: Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it? (My dad managed to drill that quote by Winston Churchill into my head when I brought home a D in history in 8th grade). Although I didn't exactly welcome this economy with open arms, it's here, and it will be here quite some time. So we might as well embrace it. Or at least learn something from it. I could go on and on about how it's been coming. How stupid I think it is that the people that got us into this aren't the only ones being affected. Or how about the fact that I can't get health insurance if I am willing to PAY, but if I CAN'T pay I can go get some from the government. Ok, I threw in that last one just to get it off my chest...but it's just another example of how out of wack the system is. My point is, if I let myself I can get worked up everyday about something different. So for my own sanity, I have to tell myself...it is what it is. Now do something.

Ever since I graduated high school I have been working non stop to 'make something' of myself. I went to beauty school, college, and found a stable job. At the time, I told myself and others how I wanted to 'be prepared'. I wanted to be done with school and have something to fall back on if I didn't work. I wanted to work as hard as I could to build up a savings so we could be in a good position when we had kids. So two summers ago, after I had been graduated almost a year, we decided it was time. Not two months after we started trying did the market start to dip and kept on going. Down.

I often laugh that I had this 'plan'. I laugh that I thought that we were finally to the point of making extra money. What is extra anyway? I laugh that I thought I got to plan how things happen. Now in the heart of this terribly damaged economy, I feel blessed. Not because things went my way, but because I was prepared and didn't know it.

When I was pregnant and people would ask if I would be coming back to work. I always replied with a confident yes. Almost every time without fail, the person would slightly wince and apologize. I found this reaction odd, in so many different ways. After our sweet Jake was born, we tried to get private insurance so I didn't have to feel like I had to as much. We were rejected. So doing what I have to do, I work. Trust me I have my days where I think I might not survive. On those days when I am breaking down and Mike says I can quit. I feel a brief sense of relief, followed by a heavy heart. Wouldn't it seem ungrateful to give up your job when so many are struggling to keep theirs? And for that reason alone, I am sure I will always work (in one form or another). But in the end I have to remember to be thankful. Thankful that I have a job. Thankful that I can provide for my family. Thankful that in a time like this I can still enjoy life and raise a family.

Besides, the other day on Facebook I took the quiz "What tv mom are you most like?" and the answer was 'June Cleaver'....so who says you can't do both?

P.S. Don't you think it will be a little bit fun to tell our grandkids about this? Like our grandparents told us? Just something to think about.

tag

I think the tag was supposed to be your 4th folder and 4th picture...and the winner is:
{Mr. Bigs one day out of the womb...poor guy}
It's been said a picture is worth a thousand words.
So true.

a bit too honest

Where has my impeccable hygiene gone? Hygiene may not be the exact term I am looking for. I mean I shower everyday, ok I am not going to lie, there have been a few days since Bigs was born that just got away from me and at about 5:00 p.m. I suddenly realize, "I haven't even showered today". Then there are those other days where I do a quick 'get ready' and run a few errands, fully planning on 'glamming it up' later; Later comes around and I am too dang tired and don't have anywhere to go, so what's the use? Showering aside, there's more. I can't remember the last time I actually got ready all at one time, without stopping. Stopping to throw a toy in Bigs direction, clean up a little vomit, wash a bottle, answer a call from the hubs, or a call from work, or a call from a client...you get my point. Along with this, I don't remember the last time I curled or straightened my hair from root to end, taking time to make each section of hair just so. You know, so when you are done getting ready, you feel...well ready. Now days, I feel as I am half hearted throwing on a little makeup and touching up the bedhead and kind of sigh as I think, "I guess that will do..." But then again, I keep telling myself I shouldn't be too hard on myself. I probably shouldn't spend an hour getting ready...Just so the little monkey can do this to my 1st day hair?

{This was actually quite minor, but I was just sad because I had JUST washed my hair...}

Next comes the wardrobe. Oh how I love putting on a clean outfit (after my shower of course), jewelry to match, about to walk out the door and then THIS happens:

{Again...not quite the full affect. Taking pictures of yourself, and trying to clean up at the same time isn't as easy as I thought it would be}

It's almost as if I have started to expect these things and if none of it happens, I am THRILLED. My favorite so far has definitely been the time I was headed to an early meeting. I thought, "I will hurry and change Bigs so the hubby doesn't have to and then head out the door" Right? Wrong. I have a little boy, I don't think I need to explain the rest. The question was, do I hurry and pick out a new outfit and be late, or do I run out the door, let it dry on the way, and just pray that my co-worker next to me doesn't happen to drop his pen and wonder why my leg smells like urine? What would you do? It was a tough decision...but let's just say I wasn't late!

{What I am usually sporting these days...thank you Lauren and Whitney (from the Hills), without you how would I ever know what was going on with hair in Hollywood. And what is better than looking like you are 12 when you are almost 25?}

THE EXCUSE...pretty good one wouldn't you say?

Although after reading through this a time or two, I am slightly disgusted with myself, I am kind of enjoying my care-free attitude these days. In the big scheme of things does it really matter how many times a week I washed my hair? Got a manicure/pedicure? Didn't think so. So I guess this post is more of a heads up than a complaint. I can promise you that my hands and clothes (minus fresh vomit) are ALWAYS clean...but I wouldn't go digging around in the hair...

3.22.2009

Since Jake was in the NICU for the first 10 days of his life, the hubs and I became quite accustomed to washing, scrubbing, and sanitizing our hands multiple times a day. With that, we also became more aware of our surroundings and the germs that may come with it. Needless, to say we came home with raw hands and a bit of paranoia. Mike tells people all the time that its only me that's paranoid and worried about germs, but whatever. Anyway, last night we went up to the hospital to visit this new bundle of joy:
{Baby Kate}
Isn't she adorable? I can't wait to see what her little personality is like, not to mention getting my hands on that hair!
It was kind of strange because we were going to the same hospital that we had become so familiar with. As we got off the elevator I just started walking right along and got the feeling that the hubs and babe weren't following. I turn around and see Mike helping himself to a handful of complimentary hand sanitizer. Oh how that takes me back! I start laughing and say, "um babe, you know that there will be some right outside my sister's door and there's a sink too, right?" He doesn't say much just that he might as well do it 'now'. Without saying too much, I think to myself how I am quite pleased with him and his new found germ phobia. Then today in church, Bigs was drooling (or what he calls playing) all over his favorite slimy lizard toy...and did the unthinkable. HE DROPPED IT, for about the 22nd time. I had just been picking it up and giving it back to him. Gross, I know, but he was happy. But this time Daddy had him and picked it up, wiped it off, and unwraps a short blonde hair (and no I didn't dye and cut my hair) from around it. Yuck! We both just look at each other, and Mike throws it in my purse and pulls out another toy for Bigs. LOL! Don't you love it when you know that you have rubbed off on someone just a little and they don't want to admit it? I do.

To live and learn...

Every so often it seems as though I am taking some random quiz that asks "What is your favorite season?" You would think after 24+ years I would immediately know the answer. Usually, I answer (in my head of course)...'all seasons except winter.' Why do I have to have a favorite season? How come it never asks what season I like the least? Usually I quickly check the circle with Summer next to it; I love warm weather, my birthday, no school, the 4th of July and vacations.

Not being able to answer questions like this makes my husband think that I am indecisive...I call it 'easy to please'. I pretty much like anything and if I don't I will tell you...until then I just prefer if others call the shots. For no particular reason, lately it has been driving me nuts that I don't have a favorite season...weird I know. So this week as Spring definately sprung it dawned on me, I choose SPRING.

I am not convinced that it has so much to do with the weather as what it represents....rebirth. I feel as though I emerge a new person each Spring. I have a new appreciation for the world around me and the good people in it. I love that even after a really harsh and trying winter, beautiful things still emerge.

Spring is defined as the 'season for growth'. To spring is to jump forward, develop suddenly, or leap (a light, self-propelled movement upwards and forwards). Interesting that such a simple word could have so much meaning, how could I have missed something so obvious? Obvious or not I still think it's pretty amazing. Amazing that life has no coincidences, just sweet surprises from a perfect plan.
